One Psychic (Classic)
This is the default and the mode most people picture. Each round, one player is the Psychic. They alone see the hidden target and give a single clue, and everyone else works together to guess where it lands. The Psychic role rotates so each player gets turns giving clues. It is fully cooperative — the whole table wins or loses together — which makes it warm, low-pressure, and great for casual groups. If you are new to Wavelength, start here.
Best for: 3 to 8 players who want a relaxed, everyone-on-the-same-side vibe.
One Guesser (Reversed)
One Guesser flips the classic setup. Now everyone except one player is a Psychic, and they all give a clue for the same target. The lone Guesser has to weigh all those clues at once and decide where the target sits. It changes the skill entirely: instead of one person modeling the group, the group has to converge on clues that make sense together, and the Guesser becomes a detective piecing them into one answer. It is a fun change of pace and puts a single person in the hot seat.
Best for: groups that know the classic mode and want a twist, or when one person loves being on the spot.
Teams (Head-to-Head)
Teams mode splits the room into two sides that compete directly. Each team has its own Psychic and its own guessers, and both race to land closest to the target each round. The cozy co-op feeling gives way to real competition and trash talk. It rewards coordination — the team that discusses well and picks the right Psychic for each prompt pulls ahead over a full game. This is the mode for a party that wants a winner.
Best for: 4+ players, bigger groups, and anyone who likes a competitive edge. See our teams strategy guide.
Which Should You Pick?
If it is your first time or you have a chill group, play Classic. If you want variety on a repeat game night, rotate in One Guesser. If you have a crowd and want stakes, go Teams. The good news is you can switch modes between games in seconds, so most groups end up trying all three in a single sitting and settling on a favorite.
